Anatomy of a Docker compose file
A Docker Compose file (typically named docker-compose.yml) is a YAML configuration file that defines multi-container Docker applications. Its main purpose is to:
- Define and configure multiple Docker containers as a single application
- Declare the relationships between services
- Define networks, volumes, and environment configurations
- Allow for consistent environment setup across development, testing, and production
In my experience, this is mostly used for local development. & perhaps deploying of simple applications. Real life is usually managed container services, or more robust orchestrators like k8s, docker swarm, ECS

When to Use
Docker Compose is ideal for development environments, testing, CI pipelines, and simple production deployments. For more complex production needs, container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes or Docker Swarm are typically more appropriate.
